Sundowns became the second team to walk away with the title in the history of South African Football, after their arch rivals Orlando Pirates clinched the same title in 1995.
It was a surprising triumph in light of the fact that the South Africans were wiped out in the last qualifying round of the CAF Champion League in April this year, just to be re-established when their Popularity based Republic of Congo adversaries were excluded.
The “White Knights” known as Zamalek had the majority possession in the opening stages of the game as they searched for an early goal in order to unsettle the “Brazilians“.However, Sundowns was able to contain Zamalek until the last whistle of the game to secure the continental title and a golden Star in their badge.
Sundowns also known as the “Brazilians” claimed their victory in an aggregate score of 3-1, despite losing 1-0 in the second leg of the finals.
The accomplishment made the “Brazilians” $1.5 million wealthier and it secured them a spot in the coming FIFA Club World Cup in Japan early December.
